‘The Trap’ PAN X 519 from 1966 by John Burke

I recently picked up a copy of a press information sheet for the 1966 film ‘The Trap’ produced at the same time for the release in May. I was a little disappointed in that it didn’t mention the book that was written from the script of the film. PosterIt was another work by John Burke who novelised the screenplay by David Osborn and it was published by PAN as X519. Burke was to be paid £350 if the book was sold at 2/6 or £525 if it sold at 3/6 which it did. I’m still trying to decide if the squiggle on the cover is a signature or just part of the overall design, any ideas?SignatureJohn produced numerous novelisations of films and TV programs under different names and I’m putting together a page to show many of the titles he wrote for PAN.

I’ve added yet another Barbara Cartland title “Tempted to Love” which now means the page has 105 of the 133 I think PAN published. The list is an amalgamation of titles from the books themselves and a few websites but having found a couple not on either of these sources makes me wonder how many more there may be and I’m not 100% sure if all the ones on the list were published by PAN. I’m slightly tempted to see if I can find them all but then again ……………..

KingsWith Christmas upon us this week I thought I would mention ‘The Christmas Book’ edited by David Larkin and published in 1975. It is called “a graphic celebration” but is really just a collection of 40 Christmas themed pictures by different artists ranging from Arthur Rackham, through Norman Rockwell to Anne Mandeville.

I have also managed to add screen captures to the list of “As Seen on Television“ in the Miscellany section, something I’ve not done for a while. It was an edition of ‘Flog It’ and they auctioning a model of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but it also included a copy of the PAN title from 1968 for which John Burke got paid the princely sum of £875 outright.. When they were talking about the book the couple who brought it in expressed surprise when told the original story was by Ian Fleming in spite of it quite clearly stating this on the cover! I was hoping to include a clip but BBC IPlayer has just changed the format and it will only play through their viewer but I like a challenge ….

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

DoyleA TV crew are currently filming about a mile away from where I am at the moment working on a dramatisation of the book “Arthur and George’ by Julian Barnes although the location is supposed to be secret. Here’s a report in the local paper.
This has prompted me to sort out all the later (from about 1970) Conan Doyle titles from PAN with ISBN numbers as the earlier ones with PAN numbers are already on the site (100, 106, 177, 286, 333, and Doyle linked GP20 ) plus the Harlequin/PAN Canadian edition of ‘The Lost World’

PANI have also received a pile of PAN beer bits and pieces from Tomi in Croatia following on from my reference to it after visiting Croatia last month. I’ve added them to the page but I forgot to include the green opener in the picture so here it is!
